{"id":598,"date":"2004-06-03T20:09:44","date_gmt":"2004-06-03T20:09:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/graphicdisplayusa.com\/blog\/?p=598"},"modified":"2020-02-11T22:48:39","modified_gmt":"2020-02-11T22:48:39","slug":"decor-transports-adults-back-childhood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/3acompositesusa.com\/blog\/decor-transports-adults-back-childhood\/","title":{"rendered":"Decor Transports Adults Back to Childhood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What does it take to set the scene for a wild childlike rumpus in a jungle filled with the not-too-scary monsters created by the imagination of Maurice Sendak, award-winning author of children\u2019s book-classic \u201cWhere the Wild Things Are\u201d?<!--:--><!--more--><!--:en--><\/p>\n<p>First, you must secure the author\u2019s permission to recreate his illustrated characters for display at the Children\u2019s Museum of Houston 2003 fund-raising gala held Sept. 20 at the Verizon Wireless Theater in Houston and entitled \u201cWhere the Wild Things Are\u201d in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the book\u2019s publication.<\/p>\n<p>Secondly, you secure graphic display boards you can count on to create these unique hand-painted decor pieces, including: two 20-foot by 20-foot set pieces featuring the book\u2019s child protagonist Max and his monster, 20 three-dimensional trees each towering 12 feet tall illustrated exactly like those in the book, 20 additional trees mounted in burlap and an 8-by-100 foot mural.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.graphicdisplay.3acompositesusa.com\/2015\/05\/67533819eb79f55c88f93b703b54b9e5_f326.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-600\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.graphicdisplay.3acompositesusa.com\/2015\/05\/67533819eb79f55c88f93b703b54b9e5_f326.jpg\" alt=\"67533819eb79f55c88f93b703b54b9e5_f326\" width=\"399\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.graphicdisplay.3acompositesusa.com\/2015\/05\/67533819eb79f55c88f93b703b54b9e5_f326.jpg 399w, https:\/\/cdn.graphicdisplay.3acompositesusa.com\/2015\/05\/67533819eb79f55c88f93b703b54b9e5_f326-300x218.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 399px) 100vw, 399px\" \/><\/a>For Angela DeWree, principle of Angela &amp; Company, LLC, the Houston-based design company chosen to create the special-event d\u00e9cor, the choice was simple. She wanted the graphic display boards that she counts on every day \u2013 original Gatorfoam\u00ae, Fome-Cor\u00ae and JetMount\u00ae boards by 3A Composites USA.<\/p>\n<p>(The Uniwood\/Fome-Cor Board Division of Nevamar Company, which previously manufactured these well-known graphic display boards, was acquired by 3A Composites USA, Inc., in October 2003.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe use Fome-Cor, Gatorfoam and JetMount every day of the week,\u201d says DeWree, whose business includes specialty social events and prop rentals, as well as retail promotion, print advertising and catalogues \u2013 all addressing the luxury marketplace. \u201cThese graphic display boards are lightweight, so they\u2019re easy to move; and, they can be painted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost importantly, these products are consistent every time,\u201d says DeWree. \u201cWe swear by JetMount.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.graphicdisplay.3acompositesusa.com\/2015\/05\/c0572bd01f9e425298908d9a3c51c8ed_f322.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-601\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.graphicdisplay.3acompositesusa.com\/2015\/05\/c0572bd01f9e425298908d9a3c51c8ed_f322.jpg\" alt=\"c0572bd01f9e425298908d9a3c51c8ed_f322\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\"><\/a>(JetMount is a sturdy Fome-Cor specialty board featuring a full \u00bc inch of enhanced polystyrene foam bonded between 11-point paper liners).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We used it the very first time it was offered by our distributor Foamboards Plus in Houston,&#8221; says DeWree. &#8220;We\u2019ve used other brands of graphic display boards where they\u2019ve arrived beaten up and cut up or they\u2019re covered with residue that leaves a powder on your hands. Fome-Cor, Gatorfoam and JetMount offer the consistent quality that allows us to do something quickly or create a piece of art.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.graphicdisplay.3acompositesusa.com\/2015\/05\/a3a67a3bac65c183ef99895d043bec0a_f323.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-602\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.graphicdisplay.3acompositesusa.com\/2015\/05\/a3a67a3bac65c183ef99895d043bec0a_f323.jpg\" alt=\"a3a67a3bac65c183ef99895d043bec0a_f323\" width=\"300\" height=\"185\"><\/a>DeWree describes the museum gala as a \u201cboutique\u201d project on which she and her staff worked off and on most of the summer of 2003 to hand paint. In addition to DeWree, Angela &amp; Company graphic design and fine artists include Jessica Erdem, Don West and Steve Minatra.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the gala\u2019s theme celebrated the book\u2019s 40th anniversary, we wanted to make adult guests feel like they were children again walking through the pages of the book,\u201d says DeWree.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.graphicdisplay.3acompositesusa.com\/2015\/05\/75a3430511c825747aa05a5d802c511a_f324.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-603\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.graphicdisplay.3acompositesusa.com\/2015\/05\/75a3430511c825747aa05a5d802c511a_f324.jpg\" alt=\"75a3430511c825747aa05a5d802c511a_f324\" width=\"300\" height=\"255\"><\/a>The trees from the book\u2019s imaginary jungle were created from sturdy JetMount, while heavy-duty Gatorfoam in the 3\/8-inch thickness was selected for the large illustrations of Max and the monster and the mural.<\/p>\n<p>(Gatorfoam consists of polystyrene foam bonded between two layers of Luxcell\u00ae, a sturdy, wood-fiber veneer laminate. This unique construction makes Gatorfoam lightweight yet durable, rigid and warp-resistant; its surface also is exceptionally smooth and strong.)<\/p>\n<p>Black-centered Fome-Cor board in the 3\/16-inch thickness, featuring black extruded polystyrene foam and black paper liners, was used to create screens to camouflage the theater\u2019s rock \u2018n\u2019 roll d\u00e9cor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.graphicdisplay.3acompositesusa.com\/2015\/05\/fd2ef307c9b5ec2ef790e24e42be9731_f325.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-604\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.graphicdisplay.3acompositesusa.com\/2015\/05\/fd2ef307c9b5ec2ef790e24e42be9731_f325.jpg\" alt=\"fd2ef307c9b5ec2ef790e24e42be9731_f325\" width=\"300\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.graphicdisplay.3acompositesusa.com\/2015\/05\/fd2ef307c9b5ec2ef790e24e42be9731_f325.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.graphicdisplay.3acompositesusa.com\/2015\/05\/fd2ef307c9b5ec2ef790e24e42be9731_f325-241x300.jpg 241w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The Angela &amp; Company designers hand-painted and stenciled the d\u00e9cor pieces using a mix of spray paints, house paints and acrylics that were applied with brushes, sponges and stencils.<\/p>\n<p>The event was attended by approximately 580 guests. Including a silent auction, the gala raised more than $720,000 to support the Children\u2019s Museum of Houston.<\/p>\n<p>DeWree was so pleased with the \u201cWild Things\u201d d\u00e9cor that, following the gala, she placed the large illustrations of Max and the monster in her office windows for 120 days to celebrate the book\u2019s publication.
